Hi everyone! It’s been almost a year, I think, since I lasted posted. I hope you’ve all been doing well.
Today I’d like to share with you my favorite things of the season! (Note that by ‘spring’, I really just mean the slightly less hot weather in the Philippines which converts to a temperature of about 28-31℃ during the day.)
Stradivarius Hooded Sweatshirt (L)
Ever since coming across the Praetorian Guard in the latest Star Wars movie, I’ve been obsessed with anything and everything in bright red. Wearing this red hoodie with neutrals adds a very exciting pop of color to my casual, everyday outfit. I picked this over other red hoodies because of it’s fabric which is almost like neoprene to the feel, and it has a slight sheen to it. I also appreciate that it’s a bit more structured (rather than slumpy) than other sweatshirts.
Levi’s 501 Taper Jeans in On My Side
Growing up, I’ve always hated jeans and denim. No matter what iteration of jeans would come out (skinny, ripped, pastel, printed, etc.), I could never bring myself to wear the damn things. They always felt so restrictive and suffocating. Unless they were high-waisted jeans, they would always ride down and reveal too much whenever I would sit down. I’d always have to cover my butt with a long shirt or a backpack to maintain some semblance of decency. If they were high-waisted, they’d squeeze the life out of me when I’d try to take a seat. Even jeggings provided no solace. They were too thin and flimsy to feel respectable as a pair of pants. It was only towards the end of 2017 that I dared give denim another chance.
Enter these pants. After watching one of my favorite bloggers, Kinda Cool, style a pair of vintage Levi’s for her lookbook, I was inspired to pick up a pair for myself. At my local Levi’s Outlet, I was able to find a pair that fit my taste quite well. These 501’s fit perfectly at the waist, crop nicely above my ankles (still with room to be rolled up higher), are neither too dark nor too light in wash, are just baggy enough that my legs don’t feel suffocated (but not so much as to make me look bulky) and most importantly, allow me to sit, lie down, and roll over in comfort. Perhaps my only gripe with these jeans are that they have a button rather than a zipper closure. At least, that used to bother me more, but recently I’ve grown accustomed it. I’m excited to have these for a very long time, as this is my first real pair of denim that I’ve invested a bit more money in.
Pulseras By Kim Gold Bar and Birthstone Gem Necklaces
This brand has been on my radar for a few months now. Since my accessories were only ‘fashion jewelry’ and stainless steel pieces I’d pick up here and there, I’d been meaning to incorporate a bit more luxury in my daily wear (particularly metals that won’t tarnish in tropical humidity). Kim is a local crafter who customizes gold-filled (notably higher in gold content than your typical gold-plated pieces) jewelry. Pulseras actually means bracelets in Spanish, although those are not the pieces that I chose. Since Valentine’s Day was coming up, I thought that there was no better opportunity to treat myself to something delicate and feminine.
I ordered two pieces from her website. The first was a gold bar necklace which could be custom hand-stamped on one or both sides. I opted to have mine stamped with NAKED as that is the state of being in which I am most comfortable. Bra-free, makeup-off, face masks on, and candles lit. The second piece I picked up was a birthstone necklace in Yellow Topaz. Although my birthstone would actually be Pink Tourmaline, I was more attracted to the golden orange hues of the November birthstone. It was so efficient; it only took my order two days to arrive (which is unheard of in the Philippines). I love these pieces and I haven’t stopped wearing them since I got them!
Avocado Tote Bag
If you read my post on airport travel from last summer, this will be a familiar sight! I used to think that totes and eco bags were just for carrying around one’s shopping and groceries. But since picking up this avocado tote in Hongdae, I haven’t been able to go back to heavier handbags. Totes fit everything I need on a daily basis, are easy to wash, easy to fold, come in so many interesting patterns, and just add a very summery, casual vibe to your outfit.
F21 Crossbody Bag
Having said what I have about tote bags, this next item might come as a surprise. Sometimes, my outfit can a bit too relaxed and I’ll run the risk of being underdressed. The tote bag will only compound that impression. When that happens, I like to swap out my tote for a more sleek, structured, crossbody bag. I bought this bag from Forever 21 since I liked that it was a bit unique with it’s atypical bucket shape. I appreciate having the choice of holding it by the handle or slinging it over my shoulder. It’s also deceptively larger than it looks. Save for my laptop and a folding umbrella, I can fit basically everything else into this gorgeous bag.
Sunnies Summer in Yuzu
Clout goggles have been sweeping the streetwear scene for a few months now and perhaps this is hopping on the bandwagon, but I can’t help but love this retro, quirky pair of sunglasses. I’d always gone for safe eyewear choices in the past, so when I saw this on the Sunnies website, I thought, why not? I may look wacky walking around in them, but their shape and color make me happy. Even the name Yuzu calls to mind quintessentially summery citrus fruits.
Simoy ng Haraya Perfume in Lambing
This is the perfume that I’ve been using the most this past week. This particular scent is a brew of lilies, bulrush, tea rose, cinnamon leaves mixed with Tanaka wood, musk, and cedar. Lambing means both ‘tenderness’ or ‘an expression of fondness’. Each perfume also comes with a specific tanaga or poem by Angelo V. Suarez. Support local, guys!
Colourpop Double Entendre
I don’t typically wear eyeshadow on a daily basis. Mostly it’s just for parties and the occasional night out. But I wanted to change that. Spending an extra ten minutes on my eyes in the morning is well worth feeling a bit more presentable throughout the day. I was looking for a palette with brown shades, but since I already had an Urban Decay Naked Basics Palette that I wasn’t too fond of, I wanted something with warmer, caramel-like hues. Colourpop has always been good quality at a reasonable price, and Double Entendre’s shadows really deliver. While they’re not as strong as Urban Decay shadows, even without a primer these are pigmented, apply smoothly, and without fall out. (I love the shade names as well! Nip Slip, Naked, etc)
Maybelline Inti-Matte Nudes in Chili Nude and Toasted Brown
I was so excited for this collection to come out! My favorite is Chili Nude; a raw, earthy, everyday red. Its color reminds me a bit of rust. It’s also the shade that I’m wearing in the picture above. A close second is Toasted Brown which is a wearable, peachy brown shade (very 90s). These are cheap, reliable, and ever so flattering (on most skin tones, I think).
Star Wars: The Last Jedi
Oh my goodness. I didn’t really have strong feelings about The Force Awakens, so I didn’t really expect to care about TLJ. But ooh baby. Chalk it up to thirst for a shirtless Kylo Ren if you will, but I have never been so invested in Star Wars in my life (despite having seen the prequels and original trilogy). Reylo is happening. I mean I thought it might be possible fanfiction fodder from TFA, but I didn’t actually think this new trilogy would take the story in that direction. Let’s face it, Star Wars hasn’t had a very good track record in the way of romance. (Shmee + Random Desert Farmer = Tortured by Barbarians, Padme + Anakin = Darth Vader, Luke + Leia = Twincest, Leia + Han Solo = Kylo Ren, need I say more?)
And yet, and yet! There is so much chemistry between Rey and Kylo that only smacked me in the face with TLJ. Rian Johnson, the director who subverts expectations, certainly lived up to his name. (Maybe not in the fanfiction world but certainly for me). The scene which truly cemented me as a hardcore Reylo was the force connection between the two in the Ach-to hut, wherein Rey and Kylo reach out for each other and Luke bursts in like a rampaging gorilla. Towards the end, when asks her to join him and outstretches his hand, I was just chanting “Go grey, Rey,” under my breath the whole time.
And on the subject of Luke, so much of fan criticism was centered around his ‘poor’ character development. I beg to disagree. His development was fantastic. Not all our heroes stay heroic. Disillusionment is a very realistic path for a jaded old man to go down. Also, many were upset about the revelation that Rey had no relevant parents. For me, that was a high point in the story. It’s a big universe out there. Not everyone can be part of a magical royal bloodline. I wish we had Rian to finish up the trilogy (it still doesn’t make sense to me that trilogies typically swap out directors for each movie; wouldn’t having a sole director cement one unified direction that all the movies will head towards?). Either way, J.J. Abrams better finish what Rian started. Hihi.
Player Unknown: Battlegrounds
I wish I had my own desktop computer in my apartment. It’s getting costly to use rental computers at PC cafes with my friends. Its nice to be able to scream at my friends (but mostly be screamed at) in person, instead of relying of mediums like in-game calls and Discord. I love PUBG. I’m a terrible player (having once shot random Chinese teammates- by accident, I swear). I freeze like a deer in headlights when I’m surprised (considering the nature of the game, that happens pretty damn often). I’m bad at aiming. I have poor map awareness. I loot very slowly. I’m pretty sure my friends keep me around because I serve as a walking backpack for spare weapon attachments, ammo, and health packs. And yet, I still love PUBG. Chicken dinners aside, each kill is so satisfying. Working as a team- however uncoordinated- is fulfilling and I can’t curb my addiction.
